Higdon Family History
The first Higdon to emigrate to North America was an indentured servant named Peter Higdon who came from England to Maryland in the 1600's.
Eventually, Higdon's showed up in North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee.
Charles Joseph Higdon was one of eleven children born to William Smith Higdon and Ida Mae Jenkins Higdon in Louisville, Kentucky. Due to his employment
with the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, the family moved to Eastern Tennessee where
young Joe grew up.
On August 31, 1940, Charles Joseph married Emily Jane Shultz. Emily is the eldest of two daughters of William Brownlow Shultz and Dora Mae Cochrum. Joe and Emily had five sons; Joseph Raymond, William Douglas, James Gregory, John Edward and David Frederick.
The five sons and their wives have several children. Joe and
Ellen: Rob, Sarah and Will; Bill
and Susan: Julie and David; Jim and Carol: Patrick; John and Laura: Eric,
Frances, and Charlie; David and Leanne: Jessie and Sam.
